Mobile Portability in India, from September 2009 onwards.

Submitted by Devakishor Soraisam on Saturday, 28 February 2009No Comment

mobile-number-portabilitySome good news for Mobile users in India, especially those living in metros. Mobile number portability will be a reality soon.  Come September and mobile users in big cities/states(‘Metro’ and Category ‘A’ service areas) will be able to change their operator while retaining their old number.

On March 5th, the government will announce the successful bidders. And MNP will be implemented within 6 months.

While this is good news for the user, I don’t know about the operators. With the advent of MNP, customer retention will be a major headache for telecom operators as it will become much more competitive. I know quite a lot of people who wanted to change the operator but haven’t done that as they have to change their number as well. The reason are a plenty, call/gprs/sms rates, service quality, et al.
